Our conversation almost always included me sharing with him some of the things I was working on and what I was doing in the city related to social justice. I was doing stuff. I wanted to make a difference. I was always busy.

Disturbing my sense of accomplishment, he almost always reminded me that I must first be peace to work for peace.

Recently I have been reminded again of the importance of my own inner work and spirituality to the outer work of fostering Communities of Shalom. Although we don’t spend much time on it in the Shalom training, I think it is vital that we all engage spiritual practices on a regular basis that remind us who we are and whose we are.

I am curious to hear from you. What spiritual disciplines nourish you? How is it that you strengthen your ability to be Shalom so that you can work for Shalom?

Commissioning Day for new Shalom Zones

Three new Shalom Zones were commissioned in Memphis and Shelby County on Saturday, June 26, 2010. It was a Spirit-filled day as we sent 20 individuals back to their communities to seek Shalom (or the world as God intends).

The themes for the day were "you already know what you need to know" and "remember where your Power comes from." It was apparent in the Shalom Plan presentations that all three communities are organized and intentional about embodying Shalom in their local communities, building on what they know and on what others in their communities know and can do. It was also apparent that this group knows from where their Power comes as the worship service was filled with God's spirit through word, praise, prayer and blessing - lots of blessing!
